To the Mods: Okay so, in the movies he has/gets a disease called the Flare; it's easy to conclude that he's already caught it since the moment they escape the Maze WCKD injects him with what looks to be a serum used to fight off the virus. In the later movie (the Death Cure) which takes place like 6 months give or take afterwards, he's definitely got it and is showing symptoms that advance throughout the movie and ultimately lead him to taking his own life. It's a zombie virus basically, it's like rabies on steroids and attacks the brain and the organs. here is a silly video explaining it sort of. It makes all the victims ultimately rabid cannibals with severe rage issues. There's no known cure other than Thomas's blood (sometime we find out in the third movie). here we have some cranks in action.

We can flub it and say he hasn't caught it yet, because while there is evidence he has it, it's not enough to say 100%, or I can bring him in with it where he's still asymptomatic, and you guys can play with that idea or w/e and/or cure him. I'm not fussed either way.

History:

The Maze Runner Film Plot & The Scorch Trials Film Plot

Newt

Basically, the first movie Newt lived in a giant maze with murder monsters and a bunch of other boys, farming and trying to survive. He was second in command after a limp due to a suicide attempt left him unable to be a runner (someone who maps the maze). After that, he became a farmer and stayed back, trying to keep the peace and keep everything running.

It's all he's known, since his memory was wiped prior to being put in the Maze.

Then Thomas entered the Maze, Newt is a supporter of the boy, and even is quite fond of him, even if he does get on his nerves. Throughout the movie, he ends up becoming first in charge after Alby is down for the count, and allows Thomas to get away with his shenanigans with minimal punishment. He follows him to the end of the Earth and out of the maze, despite some of the other boys trying to keep them all there.

In the Scorch trials Newt ends up in a dormitory with the rest of the surviving Gladers and loves the life that he's been given, away from Grievers and sweat and tears. They end up finding out that the dormitory that they thought was sanctuary is still WCKD and make their escape.

When they are free of WCKD they realise that the world they've escaped to is one that's no less of a horror show. Cranks, or zombie like humans roam the planet trying to (eat? bite?) kill everything that survives.

They travel across the Scorch, losing more people than they should as they do, and meeting a girl named Brenda and a man named Jorge who at first tries to bargain with WCKD for the Gladers. This leads to WCKD finding them and Jorge and Brenda helping them escape in an attempt to find The Right Arm, a group that is rescuing people that WCKD has taken and tested on and brought them to a safer place.

Newt and Thomas end up getting separated but ultimately the group ends up back together and they make their attempt to find The Right Arm. When they do end up finding them, it comes to light that Brenda was bit and infected but Thomas is immune and can save her with the help of a doctor who claims he gave her all the information she needed to basically start The Right Arm.

After some calm, it comes to light that Teresa sold them out to WCKD and they end up getting attacked and rounded up. The only ones to escape WCKD taking them back or killing them is Thomas, Newt and a few others. Thomas vows to kill the head of WCKD and save his friends, which Newt basically says 'sure why not' to. Not like he has anything better to do. He's determined to save Minho from WCKD.

Then all the stuff in the Death Cure happens. That wiki is pretty well done, here you go.

Newt's a creation of WCKD in the way that his memories have been scrubbed from his brain. Sent into the Glade with nothing but a probably fake name at a young age, Newt was a part of an experiment. All his memories of life before the Glade were taken from him and while it's something he's come to live with he believes it to have removed anything that may have remained of him before the Maze, stating that the creators of the experiment saw to destroying whoever they used to be. This means that Newt's personality has been heavily influenced by being stuck in a fight for your life situation where his main outside influences were other boys around his age.

Newt is a deeply caring and loyal person; despite finding out that Thomas was one of the ones that put him into the Maze he told Thomas that he was no longer that person after what the creators did to all of them. Despite the fear, anxiety and hopelessness the Maze inspired in Newt, he chose to forgive Thomas for putting him in it instead of hating him for it. This says a lot about him as a person in the way that he stays loyal to the person that put him in a twisted version of hell with monsters that wished to kill him, and creators that had no issue observing their every move. Instead of settling on hatred or fury, Newt stays on Thomas's side and helps him escape from the Maze with his life. It could be argued that he just wanted out of the Maze that badly, however after they escape he continues to support Thomas with unyielding loyalty. He'd follow him anywhere, and he'd do it all over again if he could, without changing a thing. He says so in a suicide note to Thomas in the third movie.

Newt is intelligent - named after Isaac Newton if that says anything - both with problem solving skills and the ability to befriend people. Both come naturally to Newt and brought him to the status of Second in Command in the Glade, commanding the other boys' respect. Because of his intelligence, he's an easy person to follow and instead of brash shows of power like Alby or Thomas use, Newt gets by just fine by quietly observing the situation and making educated plays. Due to this observing and intelligent nature, it makes him a good second in command, allowing him to point out when the judgement call is wrong and should be altered or not. Because of this quieting thinking, he also isn't afraid to pose his thoughts, commands or opinions. Even outside of the Glade, Newt continues his role as second in command with Thomas and their group of friends, often times telling Thomas he's being stupid, or trying to level with him.

He is also incredibly level headed, even when he has moments of panic or frustration. He's usually always there to tell Thomas to behave, or not do the stupid thing. This is something that Alby used to his advantage in the Glade and allowed Newt to always voice his concerns.

Newt is The Glue - meaning he keeps everyone together and knows how to get people to cooperate in a group setting. Because of this he knows how exactly to spot what people are good at and how to utilise them to their best potential. He also knows how to do peptalks and inspire people into doing what needs to be done. Newt seems to know what his role is - keeping people together and being the second in command. This means he inspires strength when it's needed. We especially see his placating nature when Thomas attacks Gally and Newt stops him.

He has the deep habit of feeling things and feeling them pretty strongly, whether it be protectiveness, friendship, worry, or sadness. Newt knows his feelings and the feelings of those around him, being very empathetic. Because of this character trait, it makes him a good friend to have and a bad enemy to piss off. It's also very dangerous to Newt who can take the brunt of feeling too much and end up feeling hopeless or depressed in awful situation and end up going into a downward spiral. He canonly suffers from depression and it's not pretty.

Due to his tendency to feel things so often and so thoroughly he's fed up a lot. He takes his frustration out with sarcasm and doesn't hesitate to voice when he thinks something is stupid. Because of his intelligence and his usual frustration with the situations he's put in he's witty. This ire is usually taken out on Thomas and Minho but doesn't seem to be in spite. Very little of what he does seems to be spiteful despite how agitated he gets.

In the Death Cure, Newt tells Thomas in a deleted scene that he'd gotten his limp from climbing the ivy on the Maze walls one morning and jumping off in an attempt to kill himself. He broke his leg pretty badly and Minho ended up saving him. It's clear that Newt loathed the maze, he made this clear by how desperate he was to get out of the Maze. It's also clear how thankful Newt was to have a bed, a shower and food, leading him to defend the compound from Thomas until proven it was WCKD. He's a bit desperate to have a better life, even if he doesn't believe he'll ever really have one.

Newt cares more about people than he does himself. He attempts to fix everyone else and their problems instead of worrying about his own. Because Newt bottles up his own problems it allows him to focus on sorting others' out. With this care comes respect as well, he seems to respect people a lot. Newt constantly supported the choices Thomas and Alby made as well as stayed a proper gentleman when Teresa changed nearby him. He's respectful of other people and generally tries to see things from their point of view. Even though, after being betrayed by WCKD enough that he's guarded, he still seems to try to see the best if he thinks its there to find.

Newt's bravery is astounding and while he does show fear, he also has the ability to get past it. Newt is brave enough to be second in command which means taking up the helm when the leader is down for the count. He also doesn't hesitate to follow Thomas into the Maze to escape from it. Then later once again, he follows Thomas through the desert without hesitating, only seeming to want to know what was going on. It's not that he isn't afraid of situations but that he can still brave them for his friends.

He likes routine and seems agitated by the fact that Thomas ran into the Maze and when something changes he seems visibly annoyed by it. This comes from living for years with the same rules kept to keep people alive. But when Newt notices Thomas's blatant disrespect for the rules brings results, he doesn't seem to keep the annoyance he once had.
